My students at District Pre-K site love to come to the STEAM room to build, create, explore, and dive into beloved topics such as dinosaurs, insects, simple machines, and vehicles. The kids at our center are curious, hands-on learners who love being challenged with new activities and materials. It is my goal as the STEAM Cluster teacher to create learning opportunities for my students that meet their diverse needs.
The leaders of tomorrow are in my classroom today, and it is my intention to set them on the path of success with meaningful STEAM learning.
My students enter our program at just under 3 years old, and graduate from our program at 5 years old. Teaching students at this age is such a joy, since they have a fascination and enthusiasm for the world around them. Students in early childhood learn the most from activities and projects that are hands-on, collaborative, sensory, and involve lots of opportunity for social interaction and movement.
The items on my list were specially selected to give students lots of opportunity for hands-on, collaborative play that focuses on themes such as simple machines, living things, engineering, early math skills, and cause-and-effect. For example, the Balls and Ramps Exploration set from Lakeshore Learning offers students opportunities for hours of open-ended play. The Jumbo Simple Machine Builders from Lakeshore Learning allow students the opportunity not only to observe how simple machines work, but to engineer and operate their own machines. Other items, such as the Kaplan Early Learning Loose Parts STEM Kit, allow students to learn concepts through open-ended tinkering. This allows students to build creativity and strengthen cause-and-effect thinking.
