Help Our Classroom Explore Our Creative Senses and Learn!
My students need sensory bins, big books with learning props, play dough with easy grip dough tools, smelly markers, magnetic letters and numbers, and creativity tools.
My students are very interested in learning and because of their varying disabilities, it takes creativity on my part. I try to reach all of my students different senses because that is how they learn best. Tactile and visual activities allow them to get the most out of their learning process.
My students are a group of children who enjoy social interaction and love to complete work.
Most of their work requires hand-over-hand interactions, which equals social interaction to them. My school has a huge special education population with my classroom being the most severe when it comes to the diagnosis. The students vary in disability from complete dependency on others to some being semi-independent. They are a fun group of kids to work with and care for.
My students are nonverbal and must use devices and pictures to communicate. Many of the items on the list for purchase will alleviate the frustration of feeling like they can't learn. My students must learn with their senses and are unable to complete just paper and pencil work. All work is done hand over hand with the students and every lesson must appeal to at least 2 of their 5 senses.
My Project
My students will use the requested materials to learn the material I am teaching. When telling a story, I have to get very creative and make felt characters and create sounds. The story book kits will allow me to give the students visual props while combining it with sounds from the computer.
The students will use the sensory bins to calm themselves as they interact with seek and find letters or numbers at the same time.
Within my class I use a projector screen/computer combined with assistive technology devices allowing my nonverbal students to answer questions and make choices. The requested Bluetooth speaker will allow the students to hear better because the computer volume is too low.
The play dough and stampers will bring the letters and numbers off the paper and allow my students to feel the shape of the objects.
The theme box kits are good for my students and will be useful because they will help the story come to life and allow the students to touch the characters.
This project will make a difference in my classroom because as I stated, my students are differently-abled learners and I want to be able to teach each and every child that comes into my classroom.
This project will provide me with the sensory/tactile materials needed to best teach my students. My project will make a difference because it will minimize the frustration my students feel during the learning process.
