My Students
It's time to change the current culture of learning in my inner city, urban classroom. I'd like to see every single student able to locate and evaluate primary and secondary source materials, by the end of the year. This will ensure that their transition to 10th-grade will be seamless.
It is probably not shocking for you to hear that inner-city schools are at a disadvantage.
This inequality has an enormously negative impact on the students who attend these schools. The most noticeable sign of this, in our school, is access to technology. With projectors constantly on the fritz, and a lack of functioning computers, my students start each day behind their peers. in higher socioeconomic areas, by being denied access to the wealth of knowledge available outside the classroom walls. This, coupled with the lack of access to news, television, ebooks, movies, and other educational avenues at home, is a dangerous combination.
While it may seem that the odds are against them, my students refuse to allow their situation to define them. Statistics for our neighborhood say that only 37% of students will graduate high school. Last year our school graduated 98% of our students, with 80% of those going on to 4-year higher education. They are a truly inspirational bunch.
My Project
These iPads will be seamlessly blended into my everyday practices. They will become a part of my daily routine of assessing students' needs, and targeting those needs as effectively as possible. The iPads will be used to expand the creativity of my lessons. Through the incorporation of videos, audio clips, images, music, and other media avenues, my classroom will come alive. Students will have an entire world of information, literally at their fingertips, as they take part in engaging research-based activities, webquests, and displays of creativity. The iPads will be loaded with the latest apps, which will serve to further enhance the learning experience of my students.
It is my hope that these iPads will drastically increase student motivation, engagement, cooperation, creativity, and, most importantly, learning.
By making my classroom even more hands on, students will be able to play a more active role in their own learning experience.
