My students have really gotten into investigations this year! My 4th and 5th grade students with autism love to read and love asking questions even more. Two of my main goals for the school year are improving their reading skills and helping them become more skilled at finding answers to their own questions.
While it may be our science lessons that have prodded my students to ask more questions and make observations, I would like to extend their critical thinking to a reading unit focused on mystery books. The few mystery books we've read together so far have captured their attention and increased their reading comprehension by encouraging them to discover clues in the story. Unfortunately, we only have one lonely mystery book in our classroom library.
In order for the students to interact with mysteries in a variety of ways (through read alouds, guided reading, and independent reading) we need a collection of mystery books on different levels to keep in our classroom full time. Reading these exciting books will help my students increase their critical thinking skills, comprehension skills, and reading fluency skills. These are among the most critical goals I have for each of my special needs students.
Your help will make it possible for my students to immerse themselves in the exciting world of mysteries. This will lead them to improved reading skills and critical thinking skills. Thank you for your consideration.
