"Get ready to learn!" is what I always tell my 5th-grade students every day as a reminder of what they are here for. I start the day with song and dance and have my students pumped up and excited about the day ahead in Mrs. B.'s reading class. I strongly believe in motivation and engagement.
Ever since Hurricane Irma devastated our community, my students face the greater challenge of finding the supplies and accessing the resources they need and recently, we have begun welcoming students who were displaced by Hurricane Maria.
In order to succeed, these students need all the support, as their families experience even worse financial hardship than before.
My school has a high number of students who are English Language Learners, and there are a few who are part of special education and gifted program.
Because of language barriers, not all share the love for reading and writing in English, but I would say that the more they practice, the lesser the challenge-once they are motivated and engaged in the process.
My Project
Many of my 5th-graders applied to STEM and STEAM magnet programs for middle school, which requires that they create a portfolio that highlights their work.
Although some of the gifted students have already completed and showcased the projects they have constructed, other students need supervised and structured assistance and guidance in the classroom as they do not have home support.
Apart from the art room, students do not have access to rotary cutters or mats, which are needed for the art and engineering projects.
With the rotary cutter, the students have the flexibility of creating irregular shapes that scissors or shears cannot. Your donation would help four groups of students at a time, complete their portfolios for the magnet middle school of their choice.
