Our school is a diverse, multicultural Title I school is dedicated to providing our students with a rigorous and relevant instructional program. I teach two equally wonderful 5th grade classes in math and science. I maintain high expectations for all students and truly believe in our students and their ability to succeed. At our school, to ensure that all learners can achieve, a bilingual program, instructional modifications, special needs accommodations and individualized attention are provided for diverse learners. Another high priority is the appreciation of cultural diversity, which is evident in all aspects of our school program. Students understand and respect the variety of cultures represented at our school. We were recently recognized as a World Heritage school because of our efforts in diversity. More than anything, our school aims to inspire students to become well-rounded learners and individuals.
The goal of this project is to foster the true innovation that comes with combining the mind of a scientist or technologist with that of an artist or designer.
These materials will allow my students to continue to explore the world of engineering and design and prepare for future careers in STEM-related positions.
My Project
STEM education refers to the areas of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. STEAM education incorporates the “A” for the arts, recognizing that to be successful in technical fields, individuals must also be creative and use critical thinking skills which are best developed through exposure to the arts. STEAM is an approach to the world, a critical way to understand and explore and engage with the world, and then have the capacity to change that world.
In my classroom, I attempt to make as many opportunities as possible for hands-on STEAM experiences.
These experiences allow for students to make real world connections that will enable them to become successful in future STEM-related careers. In 2016, we were fully funded for a MakerBot 3D printer. All of our projects and activities incorporated every area of STEAM. It has been an amazing and unimaginable opportunity for my students to create something our 3D printer. This project will fund a 3D scanner, colored filament and plate tape. These materials will help us to continue to use our 3D printer to its greatest potential.
