My students are curious and active 1st and 2nd graders. I have students who just turned 6 during the school year all the way to 9 years of age. They came into the school year with a variety of skill levels; I had some students who did not know all of their letters and some students who can write complete paragraphs. However, most of my students are still working to catch up to their grade level.
My students live in East Oakland, an area known for its high crime rate and poverty.
Despite this, there is a strong sense of community and the people here want their children to succeed.
My Project
I will use these book sets for guided reading groups. Children will be able to read books designed for their own individual needs in order to strengthen their reading skills. It is important for new readers to read texts that are challenging enough to build new skills, but not challenging enough to cause frustration.
These book sets will be essential in bringing my students closer to their grade-level, no matter what reading level they are at now.
I will be able to listen to them read as a group and individually in order to assess which skills I need to target and what I need to reteach.
