Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Most of my students have never even been further than the five mile radius of their neighborhood! I am a Reading teacher for an 8th grade inclusion classroom, which means half of the class is special education and half the class is general education. The community in which they live is a highly impoverished urban area, and they have little access to anything outside of their neighborhood.

Anytime I, as the teacher, bring in an article or personal experience about issues going on nationally or globally, they are immediately interested, even though it is usually the first time they are hearing about it. I shared with my students that I traveled to Africa over the summer, and they immediately had tons of questions. Our next unit is non-fiction. This would be the perfect time to bring in a gripping memoir by an African boy who is the same age as my students. "A Long Way Gone" is about a 13 year old boy who loses his family during the civil war in Sierra Leone in the 1990's and is forced to become a child soldier. He talks about the incredible hardships during this time, but also how he is able to triumph and succeed. This is a wonderful opportunity to not only teach reading skills but also talk about issues going on in Africa and teaching them about different cultures in completely different communities. Having a book that students are really engaged in motivates them to take an interest and priority in their own learning.

Since my school is in the middle of a low-income area, there are not many resources available at my school. We do not have the money to order whole class sets of books. If we are able to get two class sets of "A Long Way Gone" this would really get the students engaged and considerably help to widen their knowledge base on global issues. Some really amazing projects could come from this unit, as well. Projects such as getting involved in Invisible Children, or having pen pals with kids their age in an African country. Most importantly, when my students are interested in what they are learning, they become self-motivated in their own learning, and it excites them to come to class.

You can play a huge part in teaching my students about the world outside their urban neighborhood, and get them excited about global issues, particularly about Africa, and in their own learning.
