My students are curious and engaged in learning about the world around them, but without assistive technology, they can't share their observations, and their thoughts, or even ask for basic needs.
Access to AAC devices allows non-verbal children to develop stronger relationships with peers and important adults in their life--a key component to having a high quality of life.
Just as typically developing children need speech and language models for years before they learn to talk, non-verbal children need to see communication modeling on an AAC device before they will be able to effectively use their own devices for communication. An Ipad with TouchChat technology will allow their teachers to model communication, sentence building, and social conversation.
