My students need a class set of dictionaries and thesauruses to aid them in spelling, writing and editing as they begin crafting their own personal narratives.
Many of my students are reading, writing and spelling at a level much lower than their actual 6th grade level. By providing students with resources to use to aid them in reaching their potential, they will face fewer challenges as they attempt to improve their current level.
My 6th grade students are new to the middle/high school that I teach.
Currently the majority of them are below reading, writing and spelling grade appropriate levels. Despite this, they are eager to learn, write and discover in our English class. They come from a variety of diverse backgrounds and many do not have the resources that the school provides with them in their home.
My Project
As my students begin the journey of telling their own stories through a personal narrative having dictionaries and thesauruses to aid them in their writing will allow them to express their ideas more completely on paper. These resources can inspire my students to expound upon their thoughts and word choices because they will no longer be restricted to just the words in their vocabulary. Dictionaries and thesauruses will open a new level and world of vocabulary for them.
By providing my students with the necessary resources to succeed as they write their personal narratives and many more projects to come, it will break down the barrier of language for them.
These resources will give them an opportunity to express themselves more than they can imagine.
