Help My Students Succeed During Distance Learning

Help me give my students a book and supplies to own, make their live lesson interactions engaging, and supplement our district's curriculum to close the learning gap from the 3 months of school closure.

My Students

Our very diverse school strives to close the achievement gap between the students that have and that don't have access to resources, technology, and mentoring. Every child has capabilities, talents, and strengths; sometimes, all it takes is exposure or motivation. The students in my class strive for excellence. They all inherently care about one another and continually make an effort to improve in all aspects.

My class consists of 30 amazing and diverse students.

I have not received the class list yet for 2020-21 school year. To give an example from my class last year, eight students were English learners, seven students received resource (special ed) services, three students were in speech, and 8 students who are from low income families. They all have a think win-win attitude and do their personal best to contribute to our classroom community given the right tools and mentoring.

My Project

My students will be able to own a book! A lot of them cannot afford to buy one on their own and with the non-availability of free school and public library resources, they cannot checkout books for free. We can kick start the year by reading this amazing book on inclusion, "Bud Not Buddy" to set our classroom culture.

Erasable whiteboards encourage risk taking because the mistakes can be erased and the work can be redone.

This is especially true in math! During the math lessons using a video conferencing tool, my students would immensely benefit in having their own mini-whiteboards, dry erase pens, and erasers to quickly workout the problems interactively with me as I teach and will be able to show their work clearly in camera.

We are planning to send out workbooks home for students to practice so that there is a balance between tech and traditional kinesthethic practice. Last year in my classroom, my students were so thrilled to have their own mechanical pencils and leds because it minimized distractions and waste of time in sharpening traditional pencils. If my students get their own mechanical pencil and leds during distance learning from home, it would definitely make them more productive and motivate them.

Due to the school closure from March-June, a lot of my future students might have experienced learning loss and social emotional learning challenges. I would need to supplement our district provided curriculum by augmenting both the academic and social emotional learning using some of the amazingly successful products from the teacherspayteachers store which are also adapted to be used in a distance learning environment.

Thank you very much for considering my project!
