My students need a set of computer tablets (and protective cases) to collect, log, and upload data for their open-inquiry science field studies.

My Students
I teach science to 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students in a Title I Public School in Brooklyn, New York. We are presently engaged in a variety of student-guided open-inquiry projects based upon field studies performed outside of the school building in various parks and similar locations both around their neighborhood and throughout the city. Seeing and interacting in these "other worlds" and has had a huge impact on how my students think about themselves, life, and the future of their planet.
My Project
Self-guided field studies require a lot of data collection. My students currently record field data on photocopied datasheets, which they then bring back to the school. Upon returning, they log and upload their data to shared sites to compare and analyze their findings with other studies and interpret the results.
We would really like a set of computer tablets so we can log live data directly from our field sites and compare and analyze our findings in real time.
Additionaly, tablets would allow my students to access digital field guides, take observational photos, and hook up small digital microscopes; all features which will improve the accuracy of our data and help them clearly document their discoveries. Lastly, tablets would give my scholars the ability to communicate directly with other students, citizen scientists, and scientific institutions.
