This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Latin root of the word education is "educare," which means to draw out from within. As a school, one of our core philosophies is that part of growing up as a learner is growing up as a child. We believe so fiercely in this idea that we devote a class period for our students to have advisory.

I am the advisory coordinator for a small 6th - 12th grade school located in the poorest Congressional district in the country.

Nearly 94% of my students qualify for free lunch and all of them are in need of as much extra support and help as they can get. Our advisory program serves as one of the pillars of our school and of the school community. This program allows for a small group of students in the same grade (12 - 14 children) to discuss, think, and make sense of the world with one teacher who serves as their adviser throughout their middle school and high school career. This same advisory guides them in social-emotional growth across grade-levels and serves as the in-school "parent figure" for our students.

My Project

With these resources, my students and advisers will be able to build small communities within our school that are essential to student growth. Advisers can use LifeStories as a way for students to share their stories with one another, triggering authentic relationships between students and staff. In addition to this, LifeStories helps students practice speaking and listening skills to one another. Additionally, students will be able to use these resources to empower themselves as learners, thinkers, and young people. After building strong teams, students can lead small group discussion about relevant topics, using LifeStories as an icebreaker activity.

With your generous donations, you will be equipping my students and advisers with the tools necessary to drive student achievement and social-emotional growth.

My students are particularly remarkable little minds, spirits, and hearts and I have no doubt that your small gift to our classroom will be the catalyst to many life-changing experiences.
