My Students
Our school, located in the North Bronx, provides rigorous instruction to 6th through 8th grade students in order to prepare them for high school, college, and career. Being located in a high-risk, low-income area allows us to provide 100% of our students with free breakfast and free lunch on a daily basis. Our students are held to high expectations, including daily school uniform, silent transitions between classes, and unwavering academic rigor across all subjects and grade levels.
"Why do we have to learn this?" I, along with many of my coworkers, hear this question a lot.
Our daily goal is to push our students to their maximum potential and help find a connection between academic curriculum and "the real world." In order to do that, we work to build personal connections with our students on a daily basis.
My Project
How can students be expected to reach their maximum potential if they don't have access to the resources they need? This year, I am teaching students in both Self-contained and ICT settings. This means I will be working with students that range drastically in their academic levels and social skills for a variety of reasons, including autism, ADHD, learning disabilities, emotional disturbances, at-home/family issues, language barriers, low self-esteem, and other health impairments. These students, both Special education and General education, deserve to be provided not only the academic curriculum and support necessary to push them onto the next grade, but the emotional and non-academic support they deserve as well. With these materials, my students of varying academic abilities will feel comfortable and ready to learn. Whether it be a snack to give them energy to get them through the day, a stress ball to squeeze during that end of unit assessment, or stickers to help implement our school-wide PBIS plan. It is my true belief that students are not able to reach their full academic potential until they feel comfortable, safe, and respected in their classroom. It is my hope that these materials/this project will help them feel this way, even if just a little bit. It is my job as a teacher to make sure my students leave school each day feeling successful, not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
