Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

As second language learners, many of my students enter my classroom not knowing how to speak any English. What has amazed me year after year, though, is their ability to band together as a family and help one another succeed. The students in my room learn not only Math, Reading, Writing, Science and Social Studies, but they learn how to use their manners, be kind, and help each other no matter what their background story is.

All of my kids have one thing in common though, and that is their love for learning.

The students have very curious minds, and are constantly stretching my thinking with their questions, comments and points of view. Even the struggling students are eager leaners, and are very determined to make growth in their skills to ensure they can help their peers in need. It is the hard work and perseverance of these students that continue to encourage me to give my all.

My Project

The students in my classroom have limited access to computers and modern technology in and outside of school. I would like my classroom to provide my students with the opportunity to learn how to navigate the internet, communicate via email, and even listen to someone besides their teacher read to them!

I feel my students need access to the newest technology in order to learn the safest, easiest way to navigate the world beyond the classroom.

Using tablets in the classroom will allow my students to become more familiar with the keyboard, which will improve their typing. This skill filters into typing essays, reading responses, emails to their teacher, and eventually job applications and essay questions for high school and beyond.

The tablets will become an essential part of our Reader's Workshop and Math Centers. Having ten tablets accessible in our classroom allows for two groups of students to be receiving extra one-on-one phonics reading practice, and even math fact fluency. With so many education apps available, my goal is to give each student access to a variety of phonics and reading programs so they are able to squeeze in extra practice when I am working with other small groups. This is especially important to my limited English speakers and my very low readers who need more one-on-one instruction than I can provide in one day. In addition, students will have access to math fact practice programs to ensure fluency which is a vital skill inside the classroom, but also will help carry them through life. To give the students the illusion of playing a game when they are actually learning valuable information-- it doesn't get any better than that!
