My Students
Some of our students have exhausted the chemistry courses which we offer during their first two years - and asked what else they could take. I decided that organic chemistry would be interesting as many students are intrigued by that unit in Regents Chemistry. I had most of these students in either Regents Chemistry and/or AP Chemistry, so I know most of them fairly well.
Not all of these students have the resources to get the most out of their education.
These students deserve to have the materials needed to ensure a successful high school experience as we prepare them for college and beyond!
My Project
More students will be able to find the melting points of compounds prepared in their organic chemistry labs - and quicker - with this additional melting point apparatus. It is sometimes time consuming per group and we had difficulty getting everyone to use it this year. My students would like to verify (based on the melting point) the identity of the products they make!
This year I had 14 students take organic chemistry and it was a great experience.
They were very enthusiastic about using authentic glassware and equipment which will only make their upcoming experiences easier in college and beyond!
