This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

My Special Education Students learn more when they can have hands-on experiences in the different vocational topics that they study. The lack of social interaction due to Covid restrictions set back many of our students and some are still struggling to return to their baseline of pre Covid in both social and emotional interactions with peers. During Covid-19 these vocational experiences were limited or none at all and the students did not engage in their projects as they are doing now since they can be hands-on.

The gardening vocational section is taught year-round and it allows students to not only learn how to prepare and grow a personal garden for their use but also gives them skills to utilize when they are seeking employment after high school.

This class educates the students about every aspect from the types of tools, soil preparation, watering, planting seasons, and when to harvest. The products grown are also incorporated into their vocational cooking curriculum.

Our students truly enjoy getting down and dirty while preparing the soil and planting the seeds. They also benefit from seeing their items flourish or fail and learn from those experiences. The items requested will allow the students to add an outdoor space and expand their small indoor growing space. They will learn how to build the garden beds, use the proper tools for the planting and where specific items are used, and why. This will allow the students to plant and cultivate a greater variety of produce and enhance their learning experience.
