Help My Students Love To Read!

My students need this novel so that we can continue to learn our standards from a novel. Just reading our curriculum book doesn't always guarantee a love of learning. I want my students to love learning.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students come from very low income families, so they really don't get to experience much. We try to show them new things and introduce them to new experiences.

They are really great kids who want to excel and become great leaders and people.

It's a great thing that they can see themselves out of the situation they are in, and into a much better one. They strive to do well and try so very hard to do a great job.

I have had the option to go to other schools and to teach with friends of mine, but these kiddos just fill my heart with joy, and I couldn't imagine going anywhere else, even when I have the option to work with students that are not within the limits that these students are.

I have a great opportunity within my school to help these students become better leaders with our 5th grade Leadership Academy. It shows that we care about the students and that we want them to excel.

My Project

Using novels in a classroom is huge. It shows students that there are more than just snippets of stories out there. Our students are taught out of a basal reader and a lot of the stories in there are a chapter out of a novel. The students are so disappointed when we finish reading because they want to know the rest of the story.

I want my students to love to read!

These students want to know the rest of the story. So instead of just reading the chapter, I'd like them to read the whole novel. I am also introducing Notice and Note to them which will engage them into the book. It will make them read deeper into what they are reading and help them have comprehension of what they've read.

For the end of the year we will be reading these novels and using the novels to learn our standards. The reason that I chose this novel, Hoot, is because it pertains to our kids. They are from Florida and finding a novel that they have background knowledge about where it takes place is very important. Some of the stories in our reading curriculum include information that my students don't understand because they've never heard of it before. Since Hoot is set in Florida, the students will be able to connect to this novel. After reading the novel, I will show the students the movie and they can compare and contrast the things that are the same and the things that are different in the two. We will also be doing a project to share with other classrooms.
