Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My true test as a teacher is where my students are in twenty years. In twenty years I want my students to not only be equipped with the knowledge, but to also be equipped with the communication skills, problem solving skills and empathy that will allow them to accomplish their goals.

"Education is the most powerful weapon which we can use to change the world" This is what my 23 brilliant students read every morning.

My students spend 8 hours each day working on their goals and we know that every moment of learning takes us farther on our "Camino a la universidad" ( road to college). We are a dual immersion classroom and take pride in speaking Spanish and English, not only because it helps us, but because we can use our bilingualism to help others. My classroom serves students that are academically behind. A large majority of my class receives special education services or intervention services and about 60% are 1-1.5 years behind in reading. My kids call themselves a family and we know with hard work and a Si Se Puede attitude we will meet our goals. Due to our gaps, my kids are used to always trying to catch up and spend their time in intervention services and haven't had the opportunity to learn social skills which they will need in order to be successful.

My Project

Since a large majority of my students are 1-1.5 years behind, our school is highly focused on closing that academic gap. My students spend a large amount of time receiving intervention services or high leverage lessons to close those gaps. They are so focused and making huge academic improvements every day; however I want them to have the time to practice social skills. These dramatic play centers would be used weekly. Each week we would have a social skills objective such as how to ask a friend to use something and how to respond when asked. My students will then practice this objective during dramatic play centers and will be encouraged to use it inside and outside the classroom. My students will learn how to communicate their needs and feelings, validate and listen to others and solve problems. Through the use of the dramatic play centers they will develop communication skills that will allow them to be self advocates as well as advocate for those around them.

This project is extremely important to me because in my opinion the true purpose of an education is to empower my students with both knowledge, character and communication skills that will allow them to be agents of change in their community.

Receiving these materials will help my students learn to problem solve, share, settle differences, communicate needs, share responsibilities and practice crucial communication skills needed to be agents of change.
