Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you remember what it was like after a long day of learning to finally have time to play? My students get center time at the end of each day, where they are able to choose what center they would look to play in. We just began the school year but they already enjoy this time of day immensely!
I am an elementary school kindergarten teacher in a high needs school in New York.
I just finished my second year as a kindergarten teacher at my school. This past school year I taught 16 students in a general education classroom, and due to budget cuts, my class size is going to go up to about 26 or 27. My classroom is in desperate need of play materials that can be used during center time when small groups of students play in various centers to help them grow and learn through play.
My Project
Play permits a child to fit the reality of the world into their own interests and knowledge. Research shows that children who engage in complex forms of play have greater language skills than non-players, better social skills, more empathy, more imagination, and more of the subtle capacity to know what others mean. They are less aggressive and show more self-control and higher levels of thinking. I have requested items like block play people, storeschildren and vehicles, which will allow me to be attuned to the childrenâÂÂs play themes and build on them, introducing new content and play materials to stimulate their minds.
My project is so important to me because kindergarten education has become heavily focused on teaching literacy and other academic skills, and play is getting pushed aside.
Your donations will help foster a child's love of playing and sharing ideas with new friends. These materials will be used year after year and touch so many children's lives. Please help and encourage children to learn through play!
