Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Let's get kids excited about new vocabulary! I teach juniors and seniors in an urban, low-income district. My students want to go to college and want to have the same opportunities as their peers in other communities.
The SATs are somewhat of an obstacle for many of my students, because they have not been exposed to much of the vocabulary that appears on the test.
I want to change that! For the last several years, I have been helping my students learn the top 250 most difficult SAT words. If they are comfortable with these words, they will have an easier time reading more difficult material, and they will be better prepared for the SATs and beyond. They want to learn these words, but my standard level students often have difficulty with organizational skills.
My Project
In the first week of school, I provided them with colored index cards so they could keep their words, parts of speech, definitions, and example sentences all together. They were so excited about having the index cards, and they've been carrying those cards around with them everywhere. Unfortunately many of my students can't afford to buy their own index cards. I can't afford to buy enough index cards to provide them for my students every week for the rest of the school year. However, I am certain that having the cards provided for them each week would both keep them organized and motivate them to study them regularly.
By providing these index cards for my students, you will help them stay organized so they can more easily learn these difficult vocabulary words!
