My Students
My Graphic Design students attend an urban high school. Even though they have a lot on their plate and they come from neighborhoods that are far from affluent, they are committed to having a lasting impact on the lives of children in other countries who have even less. Like many urban districts money is in short supply for some of the "extras".
What isn't in short supply in my Graphic Design class is my students' enthusiasm and motivation to help others.
We can only participate in this wonderful service-learning opportunity, The Memory Project with help from donors like you.
My Project
The Memory Project is an initiative in which art students create portraits for children and teens around the world who have been orphaned, neglected, or disadvantaged. Given that kids in such situations usually have few personal keepsakes, the purpose of the portraits is to provide them with a special memory of their youth and to help honor their self-identity. This year our class has chosen to do portraits of children living in Nigeria. More children are out-of-school in Nigeria than in any other country on Earth. The statistics are worse in the north, where Boko Haram militants kidnap female students and burn school buildings to the ground. Only half of the children in northern Nigeria attend school regularly.
The project will allow my art students to practice kindness, empathy, and service to others.
My high school 2-D design class will be practicing their art skills by creating self-portraits. Every year when we participate in the Memory Project my students love using their skills to create portraits for children who are less fortunate. I can teach my students how to create a realistic portrait, but they want to take their skills a step farther to create a project that will have a lasting positive effect on the world. Please help my students help others.
