My Students
My class is a mix of three autistic students, who are both verbal and non verbal, who also happen to be amazing. Despite their disabilities, they come to school everyday with a smile on their face and excitement in their eyes. As you may know, autism has a wide spectrum, requiring differentiated instruction. While a tool or prop might be appropriate for one student, it might not be appropriate for the entire class. My students learn best with the help of visuals and manipulatives and doing this while social distancing will be an evolving challenge.
Our school is located in a high needs, low income area where educational resources are not accessible.
Having students with autism requires more visual resources than are supplied to us. Gaining access to different resources will benefit my students, helping them to make sense of the more restrictive conditions they find themselves in.
My Project
In my Special Education classroom ALL instruction is individualized, even more so when COVID-19 restrictions are in effect. I'm excited that instruction has moved from remote, back into the classroom. I'm so elated that my students are on the cusp of learning to read!
Individualized phonics materials, as well as the ability to print numerous individualized worksheets in color, will make this process an adventure that they will be eager to participate in.
Having the ability to give each student their own phonics set and worksheets will allow each of them to progress at their own pace.
More than half of students from low‑income households
