This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a teacher at a low income high poverty school. 80% of my students are on a free or reduced cost lunch program. While my students are bright and inquisitive, my students often do not perform at the level of students from higher socioeconomic schools due to their lack of exposure to a variety of experiences.
The parents of my students often struggle to put food on the table and homework/school supplies are not a priority.
In my classroom, I look for ways to make my classroom and the activities fun and engaging which often means dipping into my own wallet. While our school does provide a budget for supplies, it does not cover many basics which streamline the function within the classroom.
My Project
My students are heavily reliant on the schools to provide the basic materials to support their learning. One thing I have struggled with is providing students with individual earphones for their online learning experiences. Helping my students maintain their focus during guided reading is also a struggle.
I want to provide my student the earphones and seating arrangments that will help my students engage in their learning, which is needed to help them improve and focus on learning.
I feel that with these simple basic needs, they will be better able to reach their goals and become successful independent learners!
