Help My Students Fall In Love With Reading

Help me give my students ACCESS. The ability to read at grade level opens the door to a bright future.

My Project

When I was an ELA teacher, I was aware of the need for students to cultivate a habit for independent reading in order to make growth and learn in school. After taking a year and a half off from teaching I returned to a new role as Middle Grades Reading Specialist, which gives me the opportunity to work with students who are struggling with reading, and are performing significantly below grade level. The revelation of the amount of students who are not reading at grade level in our schools has been alarming and quite discouraging to say the least.

My team and I have had countless conversations about what to do, as the inability to read fluently and comprehend grade level texts affects all areas of our children's lives.

Unfortunately, due to COVID, lack of teacher retention and more, our students have suffered from unfinished learning. I have concluded that I have to go back to the basics if my babies are going to be successful.

With your help to fund this project we plan to implement a D.E.A.R (Drop Everything and Read) initiative in our Middle School. The goal is two-fold to help our students make reading growth but also to give them choices of novels that will allow them to fall in love with reading.

Thank you so much for your support!
