My Students

A typical day in my self-contained classroom can be demanding and stimulating. My days are spent refocusing my students’ attention, giving out rewards and immediate feedback. Instructing to the academic needs of individual students. This requires outside-the-box instructional approaches.

The dynamics of my classroom and the various backgrounds make my job even more rewarding: My students’ are very energetic and ages range from 12 -15 years old.

They have various learning disabilities and vocational needs. They are unique and special in their very own way and they each offer certain skills to make my class a whole. Our Per-K to 8th grade school is located in a high poverty area with budget cuts and about 95 percent of our students receive free launcher school educates close to 1000 students from various diverse backgrounds. Most of our students live in single parent households with only one low income. Sadly, some of our students are fostered, homeless and live in shelters. With that being said, 'Financial Literacy' it is very important for community, career and college readiness success. This donation will foster a sense of respect for their family and build a since of pride their community.

My Project

My students will make textual connections to characters in the selected book and then write a Reading Response graphic organizer. My students will use the materials requested to increase self-awareness and cultivate a passion for smart spending within their households and in their communities. Some of our activities will include my students visiting local business, buying and spending, interviewing a business owner, friend or family member about a time they researched a spending decision. What item were they buying? Where did they do research? What decision did they make and are they happy with the decision? Students will write up the results of their interviews to share with the class. They will learn how to make smart spending decisions by conducting research and understanding opportunity cost and scarcity.(ex: cause and effect) by solving mathematical equations. They will research to build on prior knowledge and write on how spending effects and affects their households and community

My students will become more money sensible and community conscious.

They will think critically about becoming savers rather than spenders. They will recognize the value of 'Financial Literacy’ and how instrumental in building a bright future and community. They will come to know the importance of being career and college ready.
