I know everyone says this, but our students are truly spectacular. We are a large, public elementary school with kind staff and awesome kids, but many of these are kids who are have lived through very hard times.
Our school is beautifully diverse.
Our students speak 27 languages at home and come from all over the world. We are a community of achievers who overcome odds like poverty, homelessness, and trauma to become the best kids they can be. We're at an 80% free and reduced lunch rate.
My Project
Many of our students are experiencing homelessness. For a variety of reasons, many of our students and families are living in temporary situations or bouncing between friends' and family members' homes. Many others are facing imminent eviction.
We need help to make sure that kids without permanent homes have what they need to arrive at school ready to learn.
Their families need help in the form of soap, shampoo, and toothpaste so their kids arrive at school without the distraction of feeling dirty or uncomfortable. They need some high-quality, culturally appropriate kids' books to keep with them so their children are able to read at home.
Their kids need backpacks so they can bring their items to and from school, and they need snacks to have during the school day so they are not distracted by hunger.
