This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are high school juniors and seniors who are simultaneously excited for and terrified by the prospect of college. In order to help them prepare for the college application process, I work closely with them to not only help with the logistics of such a complicated process but provide support and motivation throughout.
My students have big plans for college and their lives.
They want to go on to become doctors, lawyers, teachers, and investment bankers. They have only a short year until they will have to navigate the world outside of the school that many of them have known since sixth grade. I want to ensure that they are given all the resources necessary for them to transition from high school to college and beyond.
My Project
As the college counselor, I meet with students weekly beginning in 11th grade to begin discussing all aspects of the college application process, including creating a college list, drafting a resume and researching financial aid options. As our students enter their Senior year, they are now faced with the challenge of submitting their college and scholarship applications.
Since most college applications are done online, my students struggle with accessing the technology necessary in order to complete them.
Many of my students do not have the technology at home that allows them to submit their college applications. As a result, many of them still submit paper applications, which results in delayed processing times as well as items getting lost in the mail.
Through this project, I will be able to provide my students with access to five HP laptops that they can use during the school day in order for them to submit their college applications. Having this technology available will allow more students to submit their applications in a timely manner as well as have a place to type their personal statements, resumes and other components of the application. Since most of my students use Google Classroom, having these laptops will allow them to access their college essays and other application components quickly and easily.
