Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is a diverse learning environment. I have 10 students with different learning disabilities that I teach on a daily basis. These students are 3 to 4 years discrepant in their education. It is difficult for them to learn grade level material and retain it. They love these magazines!
My students come from lower economic homes.
They are all second or third generation Mexican Americans, whose native language is Spanish. So on top of having learning disabilities they also had to learn English (which is difficult for them). They are the most incredible and resilient kids I have ever met! They face challenges everyday at home and at school. By supporting our classroom you are supporting their education and allowing them access to texts they may not be otherwise exposed to.
My Project
These magazines will be used weekly for various language arts/literature lessons to help teach my students nonfiction text features, as well as expose them to current events outside of their community. By using these magazines, my students will be able to recognize nonfiction text features (captions, index, table of contents) in a variety of different nonfiction topics. This is just one of many nonfiction texts my students need exposure to.
Your donations to this project will help improve our classroom by allowing the students exposure to another kind of nonfiction text.
Most students do not even know what a news paper or magazine are now days. This is due to everything being electronic or on the internet. This will allow them to see that there are other options for reading materials out there.
Nearly all students from low‑income households
Data about students' economic need comes from the National Center for Education Statistics, via our partners at MDR Education. Learn more
