This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

This is my first full year of teaching Special Education. I teach at a Title I school and I was given a brand new classroom in the middle of the school year with very few supplies. My students have severe and profound intellectual disabilities. They are nonverbal, have physical impairments, visual impairments, and some are wheelchair-bound. These students are sweet as can be and deserve a proper classroom that stimulates their brains. Their smiles brighten up our day, but I'd like to make them smile more often with items that spice up our classroom and their lives.

My Project

This project will help my kids by providing them with a brand new switch activated toy to play with. Our previous project allowed us to get a dog that moves and the kids LOVE IT, but like all toys, they can only play with that so many times before wanting something different and just as exciting. I think the horse will provide them with that extra bit of excitement they need! They will be able to hit their assistive technology switches to make the horse move and neigh. How fun is that for a 3 or 4 year old that can't play with typical toys??!!

Literacy is imperative for preschool age kids and our classroom needs adaptive books.

However, these books are very hard to come by and most need to be created by me! I need a thermal laminator that can withstand a LOT of use and some laminating sheets so that I can make books my kids can easily understand and interact with. With these items, I can make books that will allow my kids to practice putting items 'on' and taking items 'off' the pages. They can also practice positional words and matching!

Many of my students are non-verbal and require devices to assist them in talking. These devices often break and need to be sent off for repair, but what do they use in the meantime? I need the answer buttons and yes/no buttons to record answers so that my students can show their independence in making choices and answering questions. These will also help me support my students during circle time and story activities since we have a limited amount of assistive technology signed out to the kids.
