This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students have been using Microsoft provided XNA materials to write their own computer games but currently the games are limited because we do not have enough controllers to test with. Currently they share my personal xbox controller and will continue doing so.

My school is an urban school located in Dallas, Texas.

I have trouble attracting students to PreAP Computer Science, but the XNA programming seems to draw them in. My enrollment doubled this year because last year, I started using the XNA materials. I'd like to attract more students to Computer Science. The ones that I've had in the past have been successful on the AP Exam and have gone on to major in computer science at schools like Harvey Mudd, UTD, and Stanford, those students have gone on scholarship.

My Project

My students will be able to test their XNA programs on the PC if we have additional controllers. Last year, 10 of us shared one controller, and it would be better if students could test their games with multiple controllers. I have recruited more students this year, and even more of us will be sharing the one controller. By providing additional controllers, more students at a time will be able to test their programs which should increase their enjoyment of XNA programming. XNA programming seems to excite my students, and I believe having more controllers will engage them even more. Currently students have to wait on other students before they can test their programs. Students will be able to write more exciting games if they have access to XBox controllers.

My students need to have the opportunity that Computer Science offers students.

So far, XNA game programming attracts students into the classroom, and I'd like to be able to keep more of them.
