Help My Nonspeaking Students Find Their Voice!

Help me give my students a printer, laminator, toys, and materials to increase their engagement in speech therapy.

My Project

I am a speech-language pathologist, working with nonspeaking autistic children with high support needs. Due to their disability, my students are still learning how to play with toys. So, most of my requested toys are easy to use, interactive, and engaging. My students also have sensory needs, and sensory-based toys create a calming, safe environment. Their primarily mode of communication is communication books, where they are learning to point to desired vocabulary. The printer and laminator will go towards making extra copies of these books to take home to practice using with their family.

Providing them with alternative communication methods is essential to reducing their frustration, expressing their wants/needs, and engaging with their family, teachers, and classmates.

In addition, as my students get older, there is a stigma about coming to speech therapy among their peers. Games like Candy Land and the opportunity to choose something from the prize box keeps them motivated to work towards their goals.

My students have grown so much in the past semester. They've been coming to class excited to learn, but we've been using the same supply of toys this whole semester. New materials would increase their engagement. My overall goals for my students is to enhance their receptive and expressive communication skills, reduce behavioral challenges, and give them as many communicative opportunities as possible to help them engage in their community!
