My Project
I am a reading and writing teacher to an amazing group of 5th-grade learners. Our district has a high level of poverty, and some of my kids lack stable housing. Despite that, they come to school every day ready to learn.
Learning can be difficult for them as they battle outside issues, but they don't give up on themselves.
I am hoping to get more headphones for my students so they can access our curriculum electronically. Being able to see and hear the text helps my multi-language learners learn English better and faster while also helping my other students listen to a wider range of literature.
Because my students have a variety of reading levels, graphic novels help engage reluctant and low readers with the same books their peers are reading. They can read and discuss the same books while encouraging them to keep finding books that interest them.
Lastly, fidget toys and other sensory equipment have been shown to significantly reduce stress in children. So many of my kids come to school with their emotions bottled up that they need an effective way to handle those emotions. Sensory items make it possible to stay in the classroom to learn rather than in behavioral settings in the school building.
