Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My classroom is located in Washington state at a Title I school. Students at my school are hardworking, kind, eager individuals. Many students are first and second generation citizens from Africa, South America, and Asia. About 42% of students qualify for English Language Learner Services but up to 50% of students speak a language other than English in the home. Our differing cultures, backgrounds, economic statuses, and languages provide richness in the classroom, but we also face challenges. One challenge is that we are incredibly underfunded. At HV, 83% of students qualify for free and reduced school lunch.
There are so many experiences and learning opportunities I wish I could have with our students if only I had the means.
My Project
Many students enter schools with the wonderful asset of knowing a language other than English. As these students learn English they're becoming bilingual, while amazing, it is a difficult task.
Help bring materials into my classroom to help my ELL ( English Language Learner) students be successful in language learning as well as academics.
My ELL students need math materials to make learning more visual and concrete. Such math materials include dice, games, magnetic tens frames and number bonds, and money representations for example.
Other materials that would help my ELL students are bilingual books. I want to encourage literacy in both English and students' first languages. I would love your help in doing so by bringing in bilingual books into the classroom for the students to read. Such books include: Because Dragons Love Milk, To the Moon!, Danza!: Amalia Hernández and El Ballet Folklórico de Méxicoas well as many other great titles. We all know that if the children do not maintain their home language, they risk losing the ability to communicate well in their first language.
I would also like help in bringing stories to my class library detailing what it's like to be new to America as well as books about children from other countries. These books would be a great asset for those students new to our country or those interested in diverse cultures. Such books include: The Journey, I, Too, Am America, Stepping Stones: A Refugee Family's Journey, as well as many others.
Please bring these materials into my classroom to help my language learners soar in school and life. Thanks in advance.
