Help My EL Kids Acclimate to U.S. Schools!

My students need vocabulary cards and activities and materials to display vocabulary, such as white boards, magnetic surfaces, velcro dots, an Early Language file folder game set and materials to use pictures to organize their classroom.

My Students

My students are primarily African-American and Hispanic. We are starting to see a large number of EL families, many of which are newcomers to the United States. They come to school eager to learn each day, and they are excited to see what the day has in store for them.

I teach at a Title I school in Illinois where 100% of the students receive free and reduced priced lunch.

Many of my students receive backpack food on the weekend, and our school also runs a food pantry for our families. Despite so many hardships, my students are eager to learn and do their best. They want to be in school because they want to learn all they can to become successful one day.

My Project

My school is in an area that has a large, growing number of EL families. Many of these families are newcomers to the United States and speak little to no English.

I want my classroom to be one in which everyone feels welcome, regardless of the language they speak.

With this project, I will be able to provide my students with picture vocabulary. I will use the vocabulary cards to sort items that go together and develop a schema for my newcomers that may not have had some of those items in their home country. I will use the tables for my newcomers to have a place to socialize with their classmates and to develop English vocabulary through play. Students will use the ELA file folder games to develop vocabulary through play.

I currently do not have any areas within my classroom to display any information. With the magnetic whiteboards and pizza pans, I will be able to have magnetic stations in which I can display information and label items within my classroom and students can work together as well. Students will manipulate letters to create words, manipulate pictures to tell a story, and work with friends all at the same time. We have story telling kits within our classroom, but no place to use them. These new magnetic surfaces will be perfect for students to complete these activities. I can model classroom concepts in a way that all students, especially my newcomers, can understand. The bookshelves will serve as methods to organize materials and places to work on activities, as whiteboards will be affixed to the back. These areas will also serve as language centers because my newcomers will be working with my students that speak English and their vocabulary can grow as they are learning academic concepts.
