My Students
Have you ever needed basic supplies in your classroom and had nothing there that you could use to assist the children? My students need books. The majority of them each year are struggling readers. They need fun and interesting books on topics that are of interest to them.
I have been teaching for many years now.
I am teaching at a hard to staff school in Brooklyn, New York. It's been a wonderful experience for me and each day I learn so very much. This year I am teaching Kindergarten. The students that I teach come mainly from Housing Projects. They come from very low socioeconomic backgrounds. Many of my students are in foster homes, homeless shelters, have a parent incarcerated or live with a grandparent. These children face great adversity daily, however they come to school each day eager to learn with their friends. Our school is a Title I school. Over 98% of our student body participates in the free lunch program. My students are often unprepared and some are not taught the sort of hygiene children should be taught. Some come disheveled and unwashed with hungry stomachs. We have to get them the services they need to change this situation. Teachers at my school are therapists and counselors all day every day.
My Project
My students need at least 60 new and exciting books such as A Color Of His Own, Shells, Busy Horsies, Baby Whale, Baby Sea Otter, Are You A Bee, Butterfly, Dragonfly, Ladybug, and Ant books to begin the new school year with. My students are often times reading way below grade level and need a great deal of support. Many need a lot of small group phonics work and all teachers at this school work very hard to move their students to the next reading level as quickly as possible. Many assessments are given as children are moved along. However there are way too many who move too slowly along with their reading levels and some decode well but have poor comprehension. My students need books that interest all readers in my classroom. I have few sports, non-fiction, joke and comic books. These are the books my boys love best of all. They also love audio fiction. Most of the books in my room are fiction which the girls prefer. I want to help my struggling readers who are mostly the boys. I want to have some wonderful non-fiction books on bugs and reptiles and all other gory things they seem to love best of all in my classroom. I want my male students to also be successful this school year.
My students need 60 non-fiction books.
I want these special children who deserve a chance to be the best they can be. My students truly love school and learning. They enjoy success. They want to learn and have fun with their friends. They have big hopes and dreams and see themselves as success stories. Let's help them make this dream a reality.
