Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

There are many challenges children go through as they take their journey through the educational world. But children with disabilities face double the challenges then other students. As a first grade teacher who has a class full of English Language Learner's (ELL's), I also have a student with autism. Autism is a complex developmental disability that is the result of a neurological disorder that affects the normal functioning of the brain, impacting development in the areas of social interaction and communication skills.

I have a child in my classroom that has high-achieving autism. This means that he is almost performing at grade level but has trouble with self-control and dealing with his emotions. He is in a general ed. class with no outside additional support for his disability. I have myself purchased a few fidgets/toys myself to help him release his aggression and calm him down, except this becomes very pricey.

The materials that I am asking for are different kinds of fidgets and materials that will help my student satisfy his sensory needs. I have asked for a seat cushion, sensory balls, a tactical pillow, weighted pencil, lap weights and etc. These additional resources will allow my student to relax and stay focused. They will help satisfy a lot of the sensory needs that are also part of his disability.

These materials will make a world of a difference for this child. I would hate to see a child so bright and intelligent to lose his interest in learning because of his disability. You can help me make a difference.
