Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My US History students are incredible critical thinkers, young historians, and debaters. They are hungry for knowledge and deeply thoughtful about the world around them. They come from a variety of racial, cultural, linguistic, and ethnic backgrounds, and all bring the unique perspective of their life experience, largely as young people of color, to our classroom community. They are moved by issues of injustice, inspired by history's change-makers. They ask questions that push me to re-think my perspectives every day.
I am inspired by my students every day -- when I find a new history article or an important current event occurs, my first thought is "I can't wait to talk about this with my kids!"
My classes reflect the demographics of our school -- mostly low-income students of color who face myriad struggles and obstacles on the path to success. Yet in the face of challenges, they continually demonstrate resilience, commitment, creativity, and dedication to learning.
My Project
These review books will be used for our collaborative study days in the months leading up to the AP US History exam. This exam is one of the most challenging exams that our students will take in high school, and study materials are often prohibitively expensive. Students succeed on these exams largely because they have the resources and training to prepare for them, and providing these materials is essential to helping close the opportunity gap and providing equity in the AP classroom space. We will use these books to engage in group study sessions, practice tests, and student-led reviews.
