Help My 6th Graders See the Past in the Future

Help me give my students books that shows examples of black and brown children and adults making a difference.

My Students

I work in a great classroom of 6th graders. They are students who are below level in reading and math and I want to help them in any way that I can.

My kids live and go to school in an inner-city public school in Michigan.

We have issues at our school as the kids cannot drink the water at school or at home. Because of COVID, we have to drink out of water bottles, instead of the water coolers. As we are continuing to go to school, I want my classroom to be a home away from home. I want my kids to strive to want to learn more and more.

My Project

Many times we see books and they represent anglo America people. Many of my students are black and brown.

My students need to see books that are about children and adults that are black and brown.

They need to read books about people who made a difference and continue to make a difference. As we grow older, these children are our future, and we need to make sure that we teach them how to stand up for what's right and how to protect others.

By seeing themselves in books, they will be able to see that they themselves can make a difference.
