Help My 1st Graders Learn to Read!

My project needs 26 sturdy magazine files (plastic or other sturdy material that will last for more than one school year).

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Kapitan's classroom raised $449

This project is fully funded

Hello! I am a public school teacher in Brooklyn, NY. I teach in a first grade inclusion classroom, meaning that 40% of my student roster consists of students with special needs. We are in great need of sturdy, plastic magazine files to use as "book boxes" in our room. These "book boxes" would be used by every student during our daily Readers' Workshop period and free time. During our Readers' Workshop period, every student has the opportunity to do independent reading of books chosen especially for them. These books are the appropriate reading level and interest level for that child. Without a "book box" to keep these books in, the independent reading portion of our period would be impossible--it would take too much time for each student to go through the classroom library to find books each day. These "book boxes" not only assist the children in knowing exactly where their books are, but they also assist those students with special needs who rely on order and routine in order to function. These students, specifically, would have a great deal of difficulty functioning successfully without their "book boxes" because the task of having to find their own books in the library would be too overwhelming. This past school year we used brand new corrugated cardboard magazine files for this purpose. They were exactly "what the doctor ordered"! The problem: they were completely destroyed by the end of the year. I had to throw them all out! So, here's where you can help! By donating plastic magazine files to our classroom, you will be providing my first graders: 1. The opportunity to build self-confidence in their reading abilities 2. The opportunity to feel a sense of ownership of their learning 3. A sense of "fun" when it comes to learning how to read--having your very own "book box" is just too cool! Ultimately, you will be providing students with the tools they need to learn how to read. The best part: YOU WILL PROVIDE THESE THINGS FOR MANY YEARS TO COME! THE STURDY FILES CAN BE REUSED! :-) Thank you for your time, and I hope you consider donating plastic magazine files to our classroom.
