Help My 1st Grade Sweeties Become Smarties

My students needs to observe life cycles in real life through a butterfly garden, from tadpole to frog kit and through pictures in life cycle books.

My Students

A typical day in my classroom looks like busy bees. I want my students to know they are future doctors and other professionals. I have to remove doubt that has been instilled at an early age through low income and poverty. "Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself." - John Dewey

Most of my students are from low income homes.

They are on free or reduced price lunch. Some talk about their parents being in jail like it is no big deal. This is just part of their lives and they are used to it. We are from a small town and some only get out of our town when we take school field trips. If a student cannot pay for the field trips, the teachers pay for it. These are the students that need to be taken care of by us. They are so eager to learn and most would rather be at school than at home. My school is so warm and loving. We come together as teachers to make sure all students' needs are meet. We bring in most of our own materials and use our own money to make sure our students have what they need to be successful in school.

My Project

The life cycle kits will be used to bring writing, research, and science alive for my students. They will be so excited to learn and watch each stage of the life cycles unfold. "Tell me and I forget. Teach me and I remember. Involve me and I learn." -Benjamin Franklin Not only will my students experience these stages of the life cycle but they will also write about the experience. They will become scientists, researchers and writers. What a great way to learn.

The donations to this project will allow my students to learn not only from books but by observing and doing hands-on activities.

These materials will bring excitement and curiosity to learning. The students will gain knowledge about life and the stages of the life cycles. This experience will provide background knowledge to be built on in future science courses.
