it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are a Title I inner-city school, located in Southern Connecticut and this is my seventh year teaching! Our school administration and staff are very supportive of our music program and roughly 20% our entire student body, PreK-8, is enrolled in the band! Every student receives music instruction from PreK through 8th grade. We have over 100 student in our grade 6-8 band alone!
Every year our program grows, but unfortunately, our budget does not.
As our program grows, we are able to tackle more challenging pieces and perform throughout our community. Our budget covers essential supplies, but as a result, we are not able to grow our inventory as much as is needed. My goal is to provide the best music education possible for my students!
My Project
Playing the trumpet with a mute is a necessary skill that my students should experienced in before entering high school. This year, in the Spring, I am teaching every trumpet player to use a mute for one of the pieces they will be performing. We have to beg and borrow from all around the city whenever I want to give my students an experience beyond the normal, everyday playing. We have only 2 mutes for every trumpet player to share, so gaining 10 more would have a huge impact on the students' access to them!
Every year, I am blessed to have such amazing trumpet players, and they deserve to have this opportunity to develop their skills!
These mutes will not only help improve their musicianship, but will also motivate and excite the students to play because this is a totally new thing for them!
