My Students

My students are all English Language Learners who are working to learn or improve their English skills. These students are often trying to learn English at the same time as they are trying to develop high school level skills such as identifying and analyzing similar themes across multiple texts or graphing inequalities using the quadratic equation or algebraic formulas. These skills can be extremely complicated for students who grew up knowing English, and are even more so for those who don't understand what they are reading or hearing.

These students most often begin the school year highly motivated, but can feel marginalized and left behind due to their English skills and resources intended for more mainstream learners.

They work twice as hard as their mainstream counterparts to do the same work, and often get left behind. My students this year are working to stop this cycle by acting as advocates for themselves and their ELL peers.

My Project

English Language Learners are fighting an uphill battle; they have to learn the same skills and material as mainstream students without knowing the language that material is written and taught in. These students need access to additional technology to help them develop their English language skills in conjunction with their normal classes. By supplying these students with Amazon Fire tablets, they will have additional access to language development applications and programs, as well as extra time on technology.

Giving students access to additional practice with a standard (albeit small) keyboard helps prepare them for LEAP, EOC, and ELPT testing, while also giving them a chance to practice writing and reading English.

Amazon tablets allow students to work with multiple language applications such as Duolingo, Rosetta Stone, and even Pimsleur's English, while also giving them access to additional mainstream resources such as IXL, Khan Academy, and Common Lit. These programs and websites are all designed to help struggling students gain equal ground with those around them and offer an opportunity for me to tailor my instruction to each students' needs.
