My Students
I am teaching Middle School Art in Greenville County's Virtual Program for my second year. I will see approximately 300 students from every socio economic background in grades 6-8th. Many of my students struggled in the virtual setting due to challenges they may face, like taking care of siblings, working on their own while parents work, or just learning how to manage and navigate a virtual platform.
As last year progressed I realized students needed incentives to keep working through the challenges virtual learning brought.
This concept follows that of PBIS as students show evidence of positive behaviors they will become eligible to earn a gift card. I hope to send students gift cards to local businesses that will not only help motivate students, but the community as well. All of the gift cards can provide a meal to a restaurant and students will benefit from the knowledge that their hard work in school may help provide a meal.
My Project
Learning virtually can have many challenges and after a year of teaching students, I know small incentives can make a difference. I can easily mail gift cards to students throughout the year as an incentive for good attendance, participation, and completing assignments.
If a student's hard work can help their family by providing a meal then their self-esteem will benefit as well.
Many of my students have additional challenges while learning from home that might include taking care of siblings or attending classes on their own while parents work.
More than half of students from low‑income households
