Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

One of the most important skills young children learn is the skill of reading. Once mastered, reading will open the door to all other learning. It is so important that no child be left out when it comes to learning to read. The more time a child spends reading, the better reader that child becomes. Please help me to provide a reading area in my classroom that will motivate my kindergartners to spend as much time as they can reading. They could go to this reading area any time they are finished with their work and choose a book of their own interest to read. The books displayed in this area will be both books for enjoyment, as well as interesting books related to our science and social studies lessons. To establish this reading area, I am asking for a heavy-duty book center that will keep books easy to see, and easy for my little ones to reach. The book center will provide a neat, highly visible display space for lots of books - at just the right height for the children to help themselves to books. The book center has overlapping shelves that show off the front covers of the books. When the books are displayed in this way, the students are more likely to choose them. The book center will be used in a classroom with 20 Kindergartners. These Kindergartners include both English and non-English speakers, as well as students with disabilities. The book center is well made, and therefore will serve hundreds of students in the years to come. My school, Germain St. Elementary school, is a multi-cultural, public school set in the San Fernando Valley. Having a reading area in my room will be a fun, effective way for my students to practise their newly-learned reading skills. Please help me acquire this wonderful book center for the children!
