My Project

My students deserve to encounter brilliant, diverse voices that challenge them to think critically about power, justice, and change. That's why I'm centering my curriculum around Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, a novel that asks: When systems fail, how do individuals become movements?

My students will analyze how Butler uses rhetoric to persuade, how movements form, and how philosophical frameworks shape action.

This novel anchors an interdisciplinary unit connecting literature, philosophy (Kantian ethics, utilitarianism, social contract theory), and civic engagement.

Students will understand how philosophy underpins political arguments, analyze rhetoric as persuasion, and see themselves as capable of shaping change. Most have never read a Black woman author in English class. Butler shows them literature can center diverse voices asking urgent questions about the world they're inheriting.

I teach in a small West Virginia community. Many will be first-generation college students. They're brilliant and hungry for ideas that take them seriously—curriculum that says "you can grapple with philosophy and think critically about justice." They see themselves in Lauren: someone who refuses to accept the world as it is. They deserve stories showing young people, especially young people of color, as agents of change. Thank you for helping me bring Octavia Butler into their lives.
