Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I'm a teacher at a low income high poverty school. 80% of my students are on free or reduced lunch. While my students are bright and inquisitive, my students often do not perform at the level of students from higher socioeconomic schools due to their lack of exposure to a variety of experiences.
The parents of my students often struggle to put food on the table and homework/school supplies are not a priority.
In my classroom, I look for ways to make my classroom and the activities fun and engaging which often means dipping into my own wallet. While our school does provide a budget for supplies, it does not cover many basics which streamline the function within the classroom.
My Project
Most of my kids are not taught good study skills at home, therefore they need to be taught at school. Responsibility is a huge factor in holding students accountable for their learning. Over the last 10 years I have gone through hundreds of plastic bags to hold their guided reading books. This has not been successful because of their disposable nature.
I notice that students who are given literacy bags as well as a spacial setting and structured environment, seem to grasp the importance of their learning.
I strongly feel that providing the right infrastructure for my students, the students will take their learning more seriously and become stronger readers.
