This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students struggle with neurological speech and communication deficits that make expressing themselves, or simply telling of the need for something to eat or drink difficult or impossible and frustrating.
My students are energetic, wonderful middle school students who enjoy going out to eat, watching movies, bowling, and other teenage activities.
They are all considered to be moderately or severely disabled. All have autism. They love to learn. I see the desire for learning more in my students than I do in their typically developing counterparts on campus. My students struggle more to learn in that they require specific formats for instruction and don't enjoy the verbal language most take for granted to tell when and if they misunderstand things. My students can't talk although they can use pictures, if available, to communicate some things.
My students attend a public middle school in southern California. They are fun and contribute a great deal to the campus community as thoughtful and caring school citizens.
My Project
Technology based instruction, iPads specifically, offer a voice with speech output programs that supercedes any use of picture books. Pictures fall out, get worn, and don't offer the amount of vocabulary and/or thought that a person (my students) want and need to express.
Further, iPads offer a variety of applications that are engaging and educational. Students can use them to practice skills until mastery is gained. The students enjoy using the iPads and therefore get more practice than they would with more traditional, or other, methods.
Finally, many of the applications are free, or priced very low, making access easy. New applications continue to be developed and are not terribly difficult to design. When a student presents with a very unique need, support can be obtained to get the most appropriate learning strategy (application) designed and to the student. All curriculum domains are available for students, from brushing your teeth to written vocabulary.
This project is so important because it involves children who need a voice.
They have so much to offer and contribute! These children have so very much potential and such a great desire to learn. Their parents and teachers see the potential and work to generate growth against the struggles of their disabilities. PLEASE help to offer the kids a voice and increased opportunity for learning!
