Our school is the oldest public school building in Illinois. Our building may be timeworn, but our staff is dedicated and first class! We serve mainly low income families with a large population of English language learners. Their experiences outside their homes are few, so we work hard to bring the outside world to them.
For children with special needs, having materials that teach self-awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making enhances positive social behaviors and improves academic performance.
My primary classrooms consists of a mix of kindergarten, first, second, and third grade diverse learners. All at different levels, all with different needs and abilities. Their curiosity and love of learning keep us striving to find new ways to engage them
My Project
Students learn best when they feel safe, accepted, supported, and loved. That's why it is important to help students with self-regulation. As teachers, we can step in and give them the tools and resources necessary for social and emotional success and development.
The books I have selected will help our primary students learn much-needed coping skills because they show positive ways of dealing with big emotions and model appropriate behavioral responses.
These books can be used within the specialized program and in general education classes to promote a school wide mental health foundation and awareness. The more our students practice self-awareness and coping mechanisms, the more engagement and learning will take place!
