Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
As special education students and English Language Learners, my students represent one of the most marginalized group of students in schools nationwide and yet, they continue to defy the odds and amaze me everyday with their perseverance. New to a country, culture, language, and school system, many come from difficult backgrounds to enter into even more difficult situations. They have what seems like insurmountable obstacles between them and success.
Yet, they come to school every day, ready to learn and work through the struggles.
With each day they spend in school, they are choosing to put aside what is easy and comfortable in order to be successful. That commitment is humbling and motivating!
My Project
Despite being of high school age, many of my students enter school several grade levels below in literacy skills, both in their home language and English. Furthermore, their learning disability has a direct impact on their ability to acquire and process information in English. Add a history of interrupted education and difficult affective factors like living in temporary housing and experiencing difficulty adjusting to the US, many of my students have not had the resources to make significant gains in their academic growth. Furthermore, we find that parents want to help their child, but do not feel equipped to support their child since they themselves are new to the country.
With these bilingual books, we hope students will be able to practice reading at home as well as involve their parents by engaging them in the reading.
We also hope that providing these resources will provide an incentive for parents to be directly engaged in their children's education as these books will be given to families for them to keep. Add resources like flash cards that focus on language acquisition and stress balls, we look forward to seeing students gain the strong foundational skills necessary to be successful.
